SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — In a coordinated law enforcement operation targeting organized crime, five individuals believed to be associated with the Mexican Mafia prison gang were arrested this week in Southern California, federal authorities announced Thursday.

The arrests were the result of a large-scale investigation led by the FBI San Diego Field Office, with assistance from the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, ATF Los Angeles, FBI Los Angeles, and other federal and local agencies. Agents executed multiple court-authorized search warrants, seizing firearms, methamphetamine, drug money, and electronic devices linked to alleged criminal activities.

The individuals arrested are facing federal charges related to illegal gambling operations, drug importation, and money laundering. The FBI says the takedown is part of an ongoing investigation into the Mexican Mafia’s criminal enterprise.

San Diego man pleads guilty to drug trafficking, illegal gun possession

“Removing violent criminals from our streets and seizing their resources is a top priority for the FBI and paramount to our mission of protecting the American people,” said Mark Dargis, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s San Diego Field Office. “Today’s successful operation is another example of what we can accomplish by working closely with our law enforcement partners on the shared goal of safer communities.”

Authorities said this latest operation brings the total number of defendants charged in the ongoing case to 16. Those indicted so far face a range of federal offenses, including drug trafficking, weapons violations, money laundering, and operating illegal gambling businesses. Law enforcement teams have also seized large amounts of cash, methamphetamine, firearms, and gambling machines since the investigation began.

The Mexican Mafia is one of the most notorious prison gangs in the U.S., with influence that extends beyond prison walls and into criminal street organizations across California. Federal officials said they will continue working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and regional partners to dismantle violent criminal groups and bring those involved to justice.
