Posted on August 1, 2025

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — For the first half of 2025, Mexicans living in the United States sent less money home than they did during the same time last year.

According to Banxico, Mexico’s national bank, remittances from the U.S. have fallen by almost 6 percent since January and by more than 16 percent during the month of June when only $5.2 billion was sent back to Mexico.

Mexico sees sharpest drop in remittances in 12 years

June marked the third consecutive monthly decrease.

Banxico is reporting that while the average amount sent back is higher than the previous year, $409, the number of people sending money back has dropped by 14 percent.

During the last 12 months, figures show almost $63 billion was sent back to Mexico by people north of the border, a drop since the peak years of 2023 and 2024.

Ninety-nine percent of money transfers were done electronically, the rest were in cash or money transfers, according to Banxico.
