SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum says Google made a mistake renaming the Gulf of Mexico on Google Maps simply because U.S. President Donald Trump wanted it renamed “Gulf of America.”
Sheinbaum made those remarks during her daily news conference Thursday morning in Mexico City.
She mentioned a letter her administration wrote to Google arguing it can’t arbitrarily change the name, saying the rest of the world will keep referring to the body of water as the Gulf of Mexico.
Countries such as England have gone on to say they will not recognize the name given to it by Trump.
“It can’t be defined by one country, a country only has jurisdiction over its territory and not an international ocean,” Sheinbaum said.
Sheinbaum reminded everyone at the news conference that in maps from the 17th century, the Gulf of Mexico was already a term being used along with Mexico being called “America Mexicana,” which included most of the current United States and Canadian territories.
“Let’s ask Google to make this change, so that when people search for America Mexicana, it will show on a map,” she said jokingly.
Google has said “Gulf of America” will only be visible in the U.S., but “Gulf of Mexico” will remain in Mexico with both terms used worldwide on Google Maps.
