Border Report – More traffic signals, better synchronization sought for Tijuana

Posted on September 4, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Tijuana city councilmember Gina Arana Cruz says the lack of traffic signals and better synchronization with existing lights is hindering traffic patterns throughout the city.

Arana Cruz says more traffic signals would also improve public safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.

“This is one of the main safety concerns in the city, it needs to be addressed,” she said. “It does require a lot of resources, but it will help, especially pedestrians because in some areas we don’t even have stop signs anymore.”

She added that the city also needs to repaint many crosswalks and lane dividers.

“There’s so much that needs to get done, there’s been instances where it’s a green light for everyone at an intersection, how is that possible?” she said.

Arana Cruz says the entire streetlight system needs upgrading making synchronization a possibility.

“We can at least do it in areas with more street congestion, this is pending and needs to be addressed by the incoming administration.”

Tijuana will get a new mayor at the beginning of October.

“Public lighting is also a huge need, streetlights are inadequate, the city needs to create a technical committee to take care of the lighting needs in the city,” Arana Cruz said.
