SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — As people drive past the man selling churros along the northbound lanes of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, they will be able to see a new mural in honor of Tijuana native Alejandro Kirk.
Kirk is the catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, who are playing the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball’s World Series this week.
“I’m super proud,” said fan Adolfo Hernandez.
Others expressed the same form of pride when speaking about Kirk, who is the clean-up hitter for the Blue Jays.
He has hit two home runs in the series already including a three-run shot Monday night in Los Angeles.
“To see him reach this level of play in the World Series, and not only that, but standing out in these games … truth is he will always be a source of pride more than anything for all of us,” said Roberto, a Dodgers fan who finds himself rooting for Kirk. “Tijuana has always stood out in producing athletes that excel, to see him reach this level of success is truly a source of inspiration.”
Kirk is a 26-year-old who began catching when he was 12 in Tijuana.
Like many young ballplayers in the San Diego-Tijuana region, he played baseball on both sides of the border growing up.
At one point he played for Chula Vista South Pony league in south San Diego.
“It’s an honor to have him there playing in the major leagues,” said Richard Ortega. “The mural is a good tribute to Kirk.
The art work was created by Mode Orozco, who goes by the name mode-nbc on social media.
He has done several other murals depicting other well known athletes and personalities from Tijuana, including UFC champion Brandon Moreno.
