SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Caltrans announced the creation of new gateway monument near the border Friday morning that is welcoming travelers coming into California.
It’s almost complete.
The new international gateway monument is replacing a dilapidated sign that had been in the same spot since the 1970s.
Located on the the northbound Interstate 5 as you get to the 805 freeway in San Ysidro, it reads “Bienvenidos a California.”
The monument is part of a $2.5 million project that was made possible through the Clean California Initiative, a clean-up effort led by Caltrans to remove trash and transform and beautify public spaces.
Not too far away is the Beyer Boulevard MTS Trolley Station, which is alsoon track to get upgrades on part of the initiative.
The transit hub is in a residential neighborhood with a lot of apartments, condos and single-family homes.
Residents and public transit riders will eventually see a modernized and safe pathway to better access to the trolley station.
