SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego’s Major League Soccer (MLS) team won its first-ever match against Los Angeles on Sunday.
San Diego FC dominated its inaugural match against LA Galaxy 2-0 as the 30th MLS season kicked off this weekend.
Anders Dreyer scored San Diego FC’s first-ever goal in the 52nd minute on MLS is Back weekend at Dignity Health Sports Park. Dreyer also scored the second goal during the match against rival city and reigning MLS Cup champions, LA Galaxy.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria congratulated the team on X Sunday night, “Congratulations to @sandiegofc on their victory tonight in their first-ever official match (and it was against LA)! I know this is just the beginning for our city’s newest team—and I look forward to welcoming them home for this Saturday’s home opener. Let’s go, SDFC!”
San Diego Football Club (FC) was founded in 2023 and Sunday’s game began its first-ever season in franchise history.
In celebration of the new MLS season, San Diego was one of three cities across the country to host a 30-foot tall soccer ball. Fans could find the giant soccer balls in New York City’s Times Square, Miami’s South Beach, and in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter all weekend long.
The team is set to host its first-ever home game at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, March 1, against St. Louis CITY SC.
There is limited ticket availability for San Diego FC’s inaugural home opener. The first 30,000 fans in attendance at the club’s Inaugural Home Match will receive a free scarf, courtesy of DIRECTV.
