SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Tijuana’s incoming Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria met earlier this week and pledged to work together to promote the arts, culture and sports programs to help young people while diminishing crime on both sides of the border.
The meeting took place at the San Diego Administration Building.
Both Gloria and Burgueño Ruiz agreed progress for young people is vital as a way to guarantee a safer future for everyone in the region.
“It’s imperative that we work together, not just to mitigate current challenges such as long border waits, contamination and infrastructure,” Burgueño Ruiz said. “We also have to build a long-term vision that empowers our youth, we could be an example to every city in both countries.”
Gloria thanked the mayor-elect from Tijuana for the visit and for his willingness to work together for a “prosperous future.”
“It’s important that strengthen ties between cities, I’m enthusiastic about the opportunities that could result from our meeting,” Gloria said.
He also emphasized that Burgueño Ruiz’s experience as an educator, saying his training will be a great asset when implementing actions and programs to help young people and children.
Burgueño Ruiz officially takes over as mayor of Tijuana on Oct. 1.
