SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s head of public safety and protection, announced the arrest of a second person wanted in connection with the murder of Bernardo Bravo, an influential lime grower in the state of Michoacán.
Bravo’s killing sent shockwaves throughout the country when he was gunned down inside his truck for refusing to give in to extortion demands by an area cartel.
It also highlighted the ongoing threat to businesses and proprietors who are constantly subjected to cartel extortion and physical violence in Mexico.
“Authorities in Michoacán have achieved yet another detention related to this regrettable homicide,” García Harfuch said. “Operations will continue, we are committed to arrest all those responsible for this crime and others that have taken place in the region.”
Mexican state and federal authorities are reminding people about a hotline where they can anonymously report crimes and extortion attempts.
“Any person can file a complaint without revealing their identity,” García Harfuch said. “There’s a new law now in effect that mandates investigations be started once a call is received.”
Growers like Bravo have been targeted by cartels as they try to control various agricultural industries including citrus and avocados.
Not only are the crops seen as revenue producers, but they provide opportunities to launder large amounts of money.
García Harfuch says more law enforcement and surveillance are being dedicated to ranches and fruit and vegetable producers in Michoacán and other states.
“We’ll continue to work in coordination with local authorities to return tranquility to these agricultural communities, their peace of mind if a national priority.”
