SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — President Claudia Sheinbaum is seeking help from gasoline distributors in Mexico to stabilize the price of gas at no more than 24 pesos per liter, about $4.80 per gallon.
On Feb. 27, industry leaders signed an agreement with the Mexican government to keep gas from going above an established figure.
Sheinbaum says she wants them to continue honoring their pledge.
“It’s helped a lot and we’re very grateful, we want to keep the cap at 24 pesos per liter, we’ll revisit the agreement this month.”
Those in the gas industry have asked for less red tape and restrictions on the sale of gasoline, something Sheinbaum promised to look into.
“They are asking for a reduction in formalities and bureaucracy and we’re working on it, something we hope to announce and implement later this month.”
The president believes a stable price of gasoline helps prevent inflation.
“This will help maintain steady prices for products, especially essentially food items.”
