SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The Tijuana Police Department has announced it will deploy officers throughout the city, particularly in the downtown area, “to make sure things are safe and secure for both locals and visitors” during Halloween and Día de los Muertos.
For Halloween night, about 30,000 people are expected to converge along the popular Avenida Revolución, according to Evelyn Peñafiel Guerra with the city’s Public Safety office.
Another big draw to the downtown area this weekend is the third annual Día de Muertos parade. It will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. followed by a food festival and arts and crafts exhibition.
Peñafiel Guerra is warning adults against using masks in public areas because violations could result in fines of up to 3,000 pesos or about $160.
“We will also have added patrols in shopping centers, strip malls and anywhere people tend to gather in large numbers,” Peñafiel Guerra said. “More police officers and squad cars will also be sent to the city’s 20 cemeteries, both private and public, to make sure crowds don’t get out of hand.”
Up to 300,000 people are expected to visit the city’s graveyards to celebrate Día de los Muertos, which is observed on November 1 and 2.
The city is also warning visitors that alcohol consumption is not allowed at cemeteries and that officers will be citing people for drinking in public.
Many of the people expected to descend on Tijuana this weekend are from north of the border.
