Border Report – Tijuana police launches crackdown on illegal firework sales

Posted on December 13, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The use of fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices is prohibited in the city of Tijuana, but according to its police department, many don’t adhere to this law and that’s why it is launching a city-wide crackdown.

Tijuana’s mayor, Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, said there will be a “zero-tolerance” policy for any citizen selling or using fireworks.

“We will act and use all our resources to remain vigilant,” said Burgueño Ruiz. “It is clear that this type of activity is illegal, no one can use or sell fireworks without a permit.”

The mayor admitted there have been businesses pursuing legal means to be able to sell fireworks, something he said the city would fight against.

“If they want to chase legal avenues to get amnesty to fight this law and be able to sell pyrotechnics, we will find our own legal paths to prevent it from happening.”

The city is also encouraging residents to report anyone selling or setting off fireworks.

“This has a negative impact on our environment, this also affects people with anxiety, those who can’t stand loud noises, not to mention pets who become frighten by the bangs,” said Aldo Gallardo, director of Tijuana’s environmental agency.

Gallardo also said clandestine firework sales goes up during the holidays, especially Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

“We’re asking distributors not to sell fireworks, we’re also asking the public to report anyone selling these materials, they can do so via our social media platforms.”

The city says it has started undercover operations in marketplaces, street corners, convenience stores and other areas of the city to try and catch people selling fireworks illegally.
