SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Tijuana’s secretary of public safety announced extra patrols in and around the city’s 13 cemeteries during the Día de los Muertos holiday on Friday and Saturday.
The agency said its goal is to provide a safe environment for families visiting their deceased loved ones.
Officers will also be deployed to key intersections around the city as a way to maintain traffic flow near graveyards.
The police department says it will also fly drones to conduct aerial surveillance.
In the past, thieves have raided family plots and taken food items, drinks and valuables set up at family burial plots. Auto theft is another concern, and there have also been disputes that escalate into disturbances and fights when groups try to use the same public spaces.
Tijuana’s public safety secretary is also asking the public to take precautions and to remain courteous to others, and to report any suspicious activity.
Some cemeteries have also announced restrictions, limiting the number of people who can come in at one time to reduce congestion at the sites.
