SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — U.S. military troops are stationed at the southern border, helping the Department of Homeland Security. What are some of their assignments?
On Wednesday, FOX 5/KUSI was able to get more clarity on the work being conducted by those troops. Many of them are tending to the border wall, specifically adding additional barriers to parts of the wall in San Ysidro.
For instance, U.S. troops were seen installing long posts against the border wall, as well as installing barbed wire.
The servicemembers are part of an initial wave of military personnel being sent to the southern border under President Donald Trump’s executive order.
FOX 5/KUSI saw dozens of troops arrive to the Border Patrol Station in Imperial Beach on Friday, with U.S. officials saying at least 500 of them are from North County’s Camp Pendleton.
The Pentagon initially said 1,500 servicemembers would be repositioned along the border with more expected once internal requests for support are reviewed.
What role the military personnel will play in the larger border crackdown remains unclear.
Marine Corps officials told Border Report’s Salvador Rivera that the servicemembers will be playing a support role, but declined to provide more specifics.
