Border Report – US Consulate issues travel alert for Monterrey highway to border

REYNOSA, Tamaulipas (ValleyCentral) — The U.S. Consulate and the Secretary of Security of Reynosa have issued a security travel alert on the Monterrey-Reynosa highway.

The State Department’s travel advisory has declared the state of Tamaulipas a Level 4 due to crime and kidnapping.

According to a news release issued by the U.S. Consulate, they have been made aware of the disappearances on the highway between Monterrey and Reynosa.

The Secretary of Security of Reynosa has issued a warning to avoid the Monterrey-Reynosa highway at night, especially in the section between Cadereyta and Los Ramones.

According to the release, U.S. government employees may not travel between cities in Tamaulipas using interior Mexican highways.

The U.S. Consulate advises travelers to take the following actions when traveling to Tamaulipas:

  • Stay alert and do not make unnecessary stops.
  • Plan travel during daylight hours.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Notify friends and family of your safety.

The release adds that travel between Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey is limited due to Federal Highway 85D during daylight hours with prior authorization.
