SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — An 80-year-old woman was accidentally shot during gunfire between Tijuana police and members of a cartel Tuesday night.
According to investigators, two police officers were in their patrol car when they spotted several men who were carrying large-caliber weapons.
The officers reportedly returned fire when they were shot at numerous times.
During the exchange, the 80-year-old bystander was shot once in the stomach but is expected to live after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Tijuana police have not released any more information about the gun fight and it remains unclear who shot the woman.
One of the suspects, an 18-year-old man, was taken into custody.
Without offering specifics, investigators say the person detained has ties to a drug cartel in Tijuana.
