El Chuqueño Blog – The Primary Elections

Posted on January 12, 2026

I always vote. Every election. School boards. State judges. Railroad Commissioner. I have even gone to the fire station to make no selection in every contest on the ballot. The tabulizer tried to kick it back, but I was adamant.

And I usually vote in the Democratic primary, because the Democratic primary is the one that counts in El Paso. The Democrats (almost?) always sweep the Republicans in the Generals, so voting in the Republican primaries in El Paso is like throwing away your vote.

But this year the Democratic primary looks like a snooze-fest. ElPasoMatters.com reports that 25 candidates are running in the Democratic primary unopposed.

I tried to access a sample ballot at EPCountyVotes.com, but apparently the County Elections Department is not ready yet, even though the deadline to register to be on the ballot was December 8, and they only work like twice a year. So I can’t tell you which are the contested races, but I’m thinking there aren’t any exciting choices to be made in the Democratic primary.

I know Jasmine Crockett is running again James Talacredo to be the next Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, but I don’t have a strong preference between the two. If I were voting today, I probably wouldn’t make a selection in that race. I’d undervote and trust the people who were better informed, or cared more about it, to make the right decision.

The Republican race for the Senate seat looks like a knife fight, with three candidates, including the incumbent, running on the strength of their Trumpian bona fides. I might vote in the Republican primary just to support an underdog.

One might think, with all the political drama taking place, that the elections might be a little more exciting.

Alas, no such luck.
