El Paso Matters – 5 El Paso lawmakers to talk about legislative session at El Paso Matters forum

Posted on December 17, 2024

El Paso’s state lawmakers will discuss their priorities for the upcoming 89th session of the Texas Legislature during a forum produced by El Paso Matters.

The event will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the El Paso Community College Administrative Services Center, 9050 Viscount Blvd. It is free and open to the public.

State Sen. César Blanco and state Reps. Mary González, Joe Moody, Claudia Ordaz and Vince Perez will participate in the panel discussion, which will be moderated by El Paso Matters founder and CEO Robert Moore.

The Texas Legislature, which meets every other year, convenes on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Among the issues expected to dominate the session are education funding, including so-called education savings accounts that would provide state funding for private schools for the first time; lowering local property taxes; curbing faculty power at colleges and universities; banning the use of tax dollars for gender reassignment; and numerous issues related to immigration and the border.

Several El Paso-specific issues also will be before the Legislature, including additional funding for a cancer treatment center and a psychiatric center that were approved in 2023.

Both the Texas House and Senate are controlled by Republicans, and all El Paso lawmakers are Democrats.

The El Paso Matters Legislative Forum is sponsored by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation.
Time permitting, the in-person audience can ask questions of the El Paso delegation. If you’d like to attend in-person, please RSVP at this link. The event also will be livestreamed at elpasomatters.org.
