El Paso Matters – Between the lines: El Paso artist Christin Apodaca’s simple lines tell complex narratives

Posted on July 30, 2024

Known for her black-and-white illustrations that capture the essence of desert and urban life, El Paso artist Christin Apodaca’s work resonates with the cultural and environmental fabric of her hometown.

Her work can be seen on walls across the Borderland – from local bars such as DeadBeach, Neon Rose and Benny Franks to department stores such as West Elm, to the Outlet Shoppes of El Paso on the Westside to Cafe Piro in Socorro in the Lower Valley.

“I think it’s so much fun to play with all the things that are actually in the desert; there’s so many different animal and plant species that people don’t know about,” the 36-year-old Apodaca said.

Next month, visitors to La Nube STEAM Center in Downtown will also see her work in the Desert Bloom learning zone for toddlers. The mural, “In Our Desert, There is Magic,” depicts desert plants and animals in bright, playful colors and in different scales and sizes.

“Christin’s work on the surface can appear simple, basic line drawings often reduced to black and white. But they often distill complex narratives about the beauty, danger and resilience of the high desert and those who live here,” Ben Fyffe, managing director of El Paso’s Museums and Cultural Affairs Department, said in a statement.

Apodaca’s art is recognized for its stark monochromatic palette of shades and black and white, diverging from the vibrant colors typically associated with Southwestern art. Her intricate line work and detailed shading bring to life the flora and fauna of the Chihuahuan Desert and the architectural elements of El Paso.

One of her notable series, “Desert Dwellers,” showcases a variety of desert plants and animals rendered with meticulous precision.

Her artwork also possesses strong feminist messages. Many of her pieces center on female subjects, challenging the male-dominated art scene in the area.

Apodaca, who began her studies at the University of Texas at El Paso and later graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in studio art, concentrating in oil painting, said community engagement is at the core of her practice.

She regularly collaborates with local organizations and participates in public art projects, using her talent to enrich El Paso’s cultural landscape.

One of Apodaca’s recent murals, “Tu Dolor es Nuestro Dolor,” created for the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, pays tribute to Latinx lives lost to COVID-19. It features a crying woman with traditional catrina makeup, surrounded by marigolds, skulls and a monarch butterfly, all of which are significant symbols in Day of the Dead celebrations.

Another of her murals, “Contigo//With You” at El Paso Street and Father Rahm Avenue, reflects themes of unity and support within the community. “Hope Lizard,” a mural located at Hope and Anchor on the Westside, is another example of Apodaca’s distinctive style and thematic focus on hope and resilience.

One of her recent projects, “Love Letters,” began with a grant from the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures in January. This project allows Apodaca to collaborate with a diverse group of female creators to create murals inspired by their own love letters. An exhibit to showcase work from the project is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Nova gallery inside the Falstaff, 3801 Frutas Ave.

Apodaca invites submissions for this project, aiming to give women creative space to share their work.

“I’m trying to give other women creative space to share their work, not just visual art,” she said. “I wanted to create a platform where they can share their work, whether it’s for the first time or the 50th time.”
