El Paso Matters – BTS El Paso: Your guide to navigating one of the city’s busiest weekends

Posted on April 28, 2026

El Paso is heading into one of its most congested weekends in recent memory as three major events — two sold-out BTS concerts at Sun Bowl Stadium, the Sol Summit Music and Cultura Festival, and El Paso Comic Con — unfold simultaneously across the University of Texas at El Paso area and Downtown.

The overlap is expected to strain parking, clog key corridors between Central and Downtown, and test public transit capacity as tens of thousands of visitors move between venues Saturday-Sunday, May 2-3.

At the center of that surge are the BTS shows, which are expected to draw massive crowds to the Sun Bowl — a venue uniquely constrained by its location within the Franklin Mountains and limited surrounding access points. The scale of the production, combined with the size and travel footprint of the group’s fan base, has required weeks of planning by UTEP officials to manage traffic flow, parking and on-site operations.

“This show is totally different than any other show that we’ve done,” said Jorge Vazquez, assistant vice president for UTEP’s Office of Special Events. “The fans are very engaged, they have high expectations, and they want to plan their experience. That’s why we’ve put so much information out there.”

City officials and event organizers are urging attendees to plan ahead, arrive early and understand how each event’s logistics may impact the others. Fans should also bring patience. Here’s what to know before heading out.

BTS at the Sun Bowl

The two BTS concerts will be the primary driver of traffic congestion in Central El Paso, particularly around UTEP, where the Sun Bowl sits within a tight footprint carved into the Franklin Mountains.

That geography is part of the challenge.

“There’s really no other venue like this,” Vazquez said. “We’re surrounded by mountains, and that limits how people can get in and out. That’s why planning ahead is so important.”

A full-day timeline — not just a night concert

Unlike a typical evening show, the BTS concerts will operate as an all-day event, with activity beginning early in the morning.

• Parking opens at 8 a.m.

• Merchandise sales begin at 9 a.m.

• VIP check-in runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• General admission lines begin forming at 3 p.m. (south gates) and 3:30 p.m. (north gate)

• Stadium doors open at 5:30 p.m.

• Shows start at 8 p.m.

That timeline is intentional, Vazquez said, to spread out arrivals and reduce congestion later in the day.

“We want fans to understand what to expect and plan their day,” Vazquez said. “If you come early, there’s plenty to do. If you come late, you’re going to be dealing with heavier traffic and longer waits.”

Parking will be limited — and sold only on site

One of the most important points for attendees — parking will not be available for advance purchase.

All parking around UTEP will be sold day-of on a first-come, first-served basis, with payment required at entry via credit card. The maximum price will be $40.

Compounding the issue is the scale of the production itself. Dozens of large trucks and trailers — more than 80, according to Vazquez — will occupy significant portions of campus lots to support the show.

The result is a much smaller pool of available parking than many fans may expect.

“People should not assume they’ll be able to drive up close to the stadium right before the show,” Vazquez said. “That’s just not realistic for an event of this size.”

Several roads near the stadium will be closed or restricted to create pedestrian-safe zones, particularly around the north side of the venue where large crowds are expected to gather.

Traffic entering the UTEP area — especially along Mesa Street, Sun Bowl Drive and surrounding campus roads — is expected to slow significantly in the afternoon and evening hours.

Officials recommend arriving well before peak times or considering alternative transportation options.

Fan experiences

To help manage the large crowds, UTEP has built out a series of designated spaces and services across the stadium footprint.

Large fan plazas will be set up on both the north and south sides of the stadium, offering space for fans to gather, socialize and participate in pre-show activities.

The north side, near Glory Field, will serve as a primary hub, featuring:

• Multiple merchandise locations

• Food vendors and concessions

• Water and cooling stations

• Medical tents and guest services

• A designated fan plaza with music and activities

Organizers expect many fans to arrive early and spend hours on-site before the show begins.

“This fan base is very engaged,” Vazquez said. “They want to be here early, meet each other, trade items, be part of the experience. So we created spaces where they can do that safely.”

Heat, hydration and safety

Although the concerts are taking place in early May, officials are preparing for warm conditions — particularly for out-of-town visitors. Partly cloudy conditions are expected this weekend with high-temperature forecasts of 74 degrees Saturday and 82 degrees Sunday.

To offer fans a respite from potential heat, multiple cooling stations, water stations and medical teams will be positioned throughout the venue. Sunscreen is recommended.

More than a dozen medical teams will be stationed across the site, along with clearly marked guest services tents.

Entry, security and policies

Security and entry procedures will also play a major role in how smoothly fans move into the stadium.

Fans are encouraged to:

• Download tickets in advance to avoid connectivity issues

• Use mobile wallets for quick access

• Expect long lines during peak entry windows

• Follow the clear bag policy

The main north gate is expected to have the largest queuing area and may offer faster entry than smaller gates, which could experience longer wait times.

One recurring issue at Sun Bowl events is fans attempting to watch from the surrounding mountains.

This will not be allowed during the BTS concerts. Law enforcement officers will be present and are authorized to issue trespass warnings and citations.

Downtown El Paso events

While BTS will dominate traffic near UTEP, Downtown El Paso will see its own surge of activity.

The inaugural Sol Summit Music and Cultura Festival will take over San Jacinto Plaza for two days, featuring a mix of global, national and local artists alongside cultural programming.

The festival’s central location — in the heart of Downtown — means surrounding streets, garages and pedestrian areas will be active throughout the weekend.

Just a few blocks away, El Paso Comic Con returns for a three-day run at the El Paso Convention Center, bringing fans of comics, film, gaming and pop culture together for panels, exhibits and meet-and-greets.

The event typically generates steady foot traffic across the Downtown core, particularly near parking garages and entertainment districts.

Downtown parking

For BTS attendees, one commonly suggested strategy is to park Downtown and take the El Paso Streetcar or Sun Metro to the UTEP area.

That option remains viable — but it comes with complications this weekend.

With both Sol Summit and Comic Con underway, Downtown parking will already be in high demand. Garages, metered spaces and surface lots are expected to fill quickly, particularly during peak hours.

That means fans attempting to use Downtown as a staging point for the BTS concerts may need to arrive much earlier than expected — or be prepared to park farther away and walk.

To find metered-parking spots Downtown, download the Park 915 app.

El Paso Streetcar and Sun Metro

The El Paso Streetcar will operate with extended hours through midnight on both concert nights, with free rides available to the public.

Sun Metro routes will also provide access to the UTEP area.

However, there are important limitations:

• Transit capacity is finite and may be strained by demand

• Service may end before all concertgoers have fully dispersed

• Post-event wait times could be significant

Download the Ride Sun Metro app for tickets, routes and to track the buses.

Using rideshare?

For those using Uber, Lyft or other services, a designated pickup and drop-off zone will be located near the SB11 parking lot along North Mesa Street at Kern Drive.
