El Paso Matters – Did Mexico’s president order a nationwide survey of elementary schools to distribute free eyeglasses to students?

Yes.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced Feb. 25 that the government would survey and measure the weight, height, oral health and visual health of children at over 90,000 public schools and distribute free eye glasses to students who have vision problems and lack access to private healthcare.

If a student needs glasses, they will receive a voucher to attend a Salud Digna clinic near them, the Mexican news outlet Nmas reported. Glasses will then be delivered to the student’s school.

Students can also get weighed and measured to identify if they require assistance from a nutritionist, according to Nmas.

The initiative is part of “Visualiza tus Sueños” (Visualize your Dreams) program, which launched March 12, under a national campaign to promote disease prevention among children, according to a news release from the Mexican government.

This fact brief is responsive to conversations such as this one.
