El Paso Matters – Do you need to pay two registration fees to use the express lanes from Juárez to El Paso?

Yes.

Travelers must pay fees to both U.S. and Mexican authorities to use the express lanes at the bridges connecting Juárez to El Paso.

First, travelers must be approved for U.S. Custom and Border Patrol’s Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection program, or SENTRI, or its Global Entry program, the agency’s website states. To enroll, applicants must pay a $120 fee and undergo a background check and in-person interview. Approval for both programs is valid for five years.

Once enrolled, travelers must then subscribe to the Línea Express program offered by the Chihuahua Border Bridges Trust. Annual subscriptions range from $350 to $500 depending on the number of bridges where the tag will be used, according to the trust’s website.

Pre-approved travelers use dedicated lanes, known as express lanes, to avoid long inspection lines at the bridges, the CBP website states.

This fact brief is responsive to conversations such as this one.
