For Dr. Brittany Shoemake, a lifelong El Pasoan, caring for patients in the Borderplex means giving back to the community that shaped her.
An Eastwood High School graduate and University of Texas at El Paso alumna, Shoemake has returned her education and expertise to her hometown, where she provides comprehensive internal medicine and advanced wound care for patients throughout the region at Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she understands the unique cultural and health care needs of Borderplex families and is committed to delivering compassionate, culturally appropriate care.
A break in the skin that doesn’t heal after weeks of treatment is considered a chronic wound. Left untreated, chronic wounds can lead to serious complications, including chronic pain, infections, loss of mobility and even amputation. They can also affect a patient’s emotional well-being and create financial hardship.
Shoemake is board-certified in internal medicine and is a certified wound specialist physician, bringing together expertise in diagnosing complex medical conditions with advanced wound management.
Her specialized wound care focuses on accelerating healing, preventing complications and restoring function, particularly for patients living with chronic conditions such as diabetes and vascular disease.
“One of the most rewarding parts of wound care is seeing tangible improvement week after week and knowing that those gains translate into better function, independence and quality of life for patients,” Shoemake said.
She offers advanced wound care services including removal of unhealthy tissue, compression therapy, pressure offloading strategies, infection identification and comprehensive treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs.
Caring for the community that raised her
As someone who has spent her life in El Paso, Shoemake says caring for local patients is deeply personal.
“Being bilingual and understanding our community’s values allows me to connect more deeply with patients and ensure there are no barriers to understanding their care,” she said.
Her ability to communicate fluently in English and Spanish helps patients and families better understand their diagnoses, treatment options and long-term care plans, building trust and improving outcomes.
Drawn to internal medicine because of its emphasis on long-term relationships and thoughtful diagnostic reasoning, Shoemake takes a whole-person approach to care.
“Internal medicine allows me to build lasting relationships with patients and think carefully about how to improve their quality of life over time,” she said. “Understanding each patient’s history, goals and challenges helps me support healthier, fuller lives.”
Prevention and education
Preventive care and patient education are central to Shoemake’s philosophy. She partners closely with patients and families, emphasizing manageable lifestyle changes, early screenings and consistent follow-up to help prevent serious complications before they develop.
“Long-term health is built on partnership and education,” she said. “Small, manageable changes often lead to the biggest improvements over time.”
In addition to caring for patients, Shoemake serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Medical Education at Texas Tech Health El Paso’s Foster School of Medicine, where she helps educate the next generation of physicians.
Working alongside students, residents and faculty in an academic medical center strengthens clinical decision-making and ensures patients benefit from the latest evidence-based care.
“The academic setting allows us to combine fresh perspectives with experienced clinical judgment, which ultimately elevates the care we provide to patients,” she said.
Through her clinical expertise, hometown roots and commitment to culturally responsive care, Shoemake embodies Texas Tech Health El Paso’s mission of improving the health and well-being of the Borderplex community.
