El Paso Matters – El Paso events: Fiesta Latina, Segundo Barrio murals tour, UTEP volleyball finale

Posted on November 13, 2024

Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

Los Murales de Segundo Barrio

Explore El Paso’s artistic heritage with the Los Murales de Segundo Barrio Tour, a free, guided experience through the iconic Segundo Barrio on from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Nov. 15. Led by renowned El Paso muralist Jesus “Cimi” Alvarado, the tour invites attendees to immerse themselves in over 15 murals capturing the Mexican and Chicano culture, history and political spirit that defines this historic neighborhood.

Dubbed the “Ellis Island of the Border,” Segundo Barrio tells the story of migration, resilience, and community through its art. Participants will meet at the Father Rahm mural, located in the 100 block of Father Rahm Avenue, and traverse a one-square-mile area on foot, culminating with an optional lunch at El Chewco. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

Information and RSVP: Eventbrite or the Tom Lea Institute website.

Downtown Fiesta Latina

Experience the spirit of Latin culture during the first Downtown Fiesta Latina, which is scheduled from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the intersection of Texas Avenue and Mesa Street in Downtown El Paso. Presented by the El Paso Downtown Management District with support from GCC Sun City Materials, this free event will feature live music, dance competitions and offerings from local food trucks.

Highlights include salsa and cumbia dance contests, face painting for kids and exclusive pop-up shops and workshops from local businesses. The evening will be capped off by performances from Team Havana and International Sonora Skandalo for a lively night of music, dance and celebration. Information: downtownelpaso.com

This free event offers families resources to help prepare for the winter season, including free coats for children, vision screenings and low-cost vaccines.

Parents can also connect with vendors and explore community resources, while kids enjoy educational activities, giveaways and more. Open to the public, the fair aims to provide support and warmth to families as they get ready for the colder months.
