El Paso Matters – El Paso events: Locos Live, DA candidate forum, Winefest, more

Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

Locos Live

El Paso Live and El Paso Locomotive FC will host Locos Live, a special fan appreciation night marking the conclusion of the 2024 Locomotive FC season from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at El Paso Convention Center Plaza, 1 Civic Center Plaza. This free, all-ages event will take place after the Locomotive’s home finale against Sacramento Republic FC at Southwest University Park. Locos Live will feature live music from the Roulettes, along with food, drinks and family-friendly activities. Information: Locomotive FC

El Paso Winefest

The 11th annual El Paso Winefest will be held Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 19-20, at 201 E. Main St. in Downtown. The weekend begins with the grand tasting from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, featuring over 500 wines and signature dishes from 25 top local restaurants. A culinary competition, led by the Culinary Institute of Southwest University, is scheduled from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets for both events range from $75 to $175, with VIP options available. Proceeds benefit Rotary Club of El Paso’s community projects. Information: elpasowinefest.com

El Paso Matters/FitFam Candidate Forum

A forum featuring El Paso district attorney candidates Bill Hicks, the Republican incumbent, and James Montoya, the Democratic challenger, will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at El Paso Community College’s Administrative Services Center.  

The forum will provide voters with insights into the candidates’ stances on key issues impacting El Paso’s criminal justice system prior to the Nov. 5 election. The public can submit questions in advance via text message by subscribing to El Paso Matters’ text service.

The event will take place at EPCC headquarters, 9050 Viscount Blvd. It will also be livestreamed on FitFam El Paso’s Instagram page and on El Paso Matters’ website.

El Paso Symphony Orchestra Presents Great Italian Arias

The El Paso Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with El Paso Opera, presents Great Italian Arias on Oct. 18-19 at the Plaza Theatre, 125 W. Mills Ave. Under the direction of conductor Bohuslav Rattay, the performance will feature renowned arias such as “La Donna è mobile” from Rigoletto and “Casta diva” from Norma, performed by soprano Jamille Lea, tenor Brian Downen and baritone Jonathan Hays.

The concerts will also include the Der Rosenkavalier Suite by Richard Strauss. Tickets range from $17 to $49. Attendees can enjoy pre-concert insights with Nathan Black at 6:30 p.m. at the Philanthropy Theatre. Information and tickets: epso.org

Intersecting Art Forms — Tom Lea Fellows Presentation

The University of Texas at El Paso Tom Lea Fellows will present their unique perspectives on the life and work of renowned artist and writer Tom Lea during “Intersecting Art Forms” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at the El Paso Natural Gas Conference Center on campus. 

The event will feature presentations by psychology undergraduate Carlos Castro, sociology master’s student Jeralyn Barbie, and dance studies undergraduate Michelle Ramirez, each exploring different facets of Lea’s art, from his connection to the border region to his depictions of the American Southwest and the body’s role in his landscapes. Though admission is free, attendees are encouraged to RSVP.

The event is part of the Tom Lea Celebration 2024-25 that includes events across El Paso, the borderland and along the Tom Lea Trail. Information: tomlea.com

El Paso Fun Fest

El Paso Fun Fest 2024 is set to welcome residents from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Marty Robbins Park, 11620 Vista del Sol Drive, offering family-friendly entertainment with free admission. Organized by El Paso Directory and El Paso Parks and Recreation, the event celebrates local students and their families with games, jumping balloons, food trucks, live music, vendor stands and giveaways. Students with AB honor roll or perfect attendance will enjoy free treats, unlimited rides, and chances to win bicycles throughout the day. Information: elpasofunfest.com or 915-867-2315.

YWCA Fall Family Fiesta

YWCA El Paso is hosting its Fall Family Fiesta from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the organization’s Katharine White Harvey Branch, 313 Bartlett Drive. The free event offers fun for all ages with snacks, refreshments, a costume contest and trick-or-treat activities. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume. Hikes, Walks & Rock Climbing

Hunter Full Moon Hike: Experience El Paso’s mountains under the stars during the Hunter Full Moon Hike at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Chuck Heinrich Park, ​​11055 Loma Del Norte Drive. This guided evening hike offers participants the chance to enjoy the sunset and watch the moonrise, weather permitting. The hike covers rocky terrain, making it suitable for beginners. Refreshments will be provided post-hike. Admission is free for Texas park pass holders, while non-pass holders can join for $5. Information: wehikeadventure.com

Night Women Hike: Women are invited to explore the Chihuahuan Desert during a Night Women Hike at Cardiac Hill, hosted at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at Chuck Heinrich Memorial Park, 11055 Loma Del Norte Drive. This 3.7-mile hike, led by a female ranger or volunteer, offers participants a chance to learn about desert ecosystems while enjoying a moderately challenging trail under the night sky. Reservations are required, and the cost is $5 per adult, with free admission for Texas State Park Pass holders and children ages 12 and younger. Information: 444-9121.

Hueco Tanks Community Fair: Celebrate nature and history during the 30th Annual Hueco Tanks Community Fair on Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 19-20, at Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site, 6900 Hueco Tanks Road No 1. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, visitors can enjoy free admission to educational tours, wildlife presentations, Native American demonstrations and rock climbing. Information: 915-857-1135.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Events

“Fiesta Rosa”: The Consul General of Mexico in El Paso hosts “Fiesta Rosa” from 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 18, at Santa Teresa High School. The event is free and attendees can participate in a Zumbathon, enjoy a talk on breast cancer prevention, and visit health stations offering resources and services.

Breast on the Move 5K Run/Walk: The Breast On the Move 5K Run/Walk, hosted by the Gamma Gamma Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha at the University of Texas at El Paso, will take place at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at Sun Bowl Stadium. Participants will honor breast cancer survivors, fighters and caregivers from the El Paso community. Information: On the Move or utepztaphilanthropy.vp4@gmail.com
