UTEP Minerpalooza
Minerpalooza returns to the University of Texas at El Paso campus from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, marking its 35th anniversary with an evening of festivities expected to draw up to 25,000 attendees. The university’s marquee back-to-school community celebration will take place in Centennial Plaza in the heart of campus. This free event offers a blend of live performances, food vendors and activity booths that cater to students and the broader community. Admission is free, but tickets are required for games and attractions inside Pete’s Playground, with prices starting at $1 per ticket. The event also features a beer and wine garden for guests ages 21 and older. UTEP’s clear bag policy will be in effect for the safety of all attendees. Information: utep.edu/minerpalooza
UTEP Home Opener
The University of Texas at El Paso football team plays its first home game of the 2024 season at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, in Sun Bowl Stadium. The Miners host Southern Utah University. Fans can look forward to the revival of the iconic “Mine Shaft” entrance this season. This unique tradition, first made famous by former head coach Mike Price, will return with new elements and surprises during the home opener against the Thunderbirds. Fans are encouraged to be seated 10 minutes before kickoff to witness the entrance. Additionally, the pre-game “Miner Walk” will feature an updated route through Paydirt’s Pregame Party Zone in the GR2 parking lot north of the Sun Bowl. Family Day at El Paso Museum of History
The El Paso Museum of History, 510 N. Santa Fe St., will host a Family Day event from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, featuring the Frontera Arts & Education Collaborative and Amanecer People’s Project. The free event will include a pop-up exhibit titled “Environment on the Edge: Climate Justice in El Paso,” hands-on crafts, and a story time and art-making activity led by the Amanecer People’s Project. Additionally, the public can participate in Project Mariposa, a yearlong collaborative art series that will create a community-driven monarch butterfly installation symbolizing hope and freedom. The event is open to all ages.
Friday Night Lights in El Paso
Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast Thursday and Friday a week after the start of the high-school football season was impacted by lightning delays at games throughout the region. Week 2 of the high school football season will see the first full, two-day schedule of games taking place at the newly opened Socorro Independent School District Student Activities Complex II, 1300 Joe Battle Blvd. See the complete schedule below.

Walk of Hope
The Walk of Hope, scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta Drive, is a community event dedicated to honoring individuals affected by cancer. The evening will feature live music, games, food and a race featuring local mascots. Attendees will walk alongside more than 1,500 luminarias placed around the lake in observance of Children’s Cancer Awareness Month. Diana Natalicio Lecture Series
Sylvia Hurtado, a distinguished professor of education and former director of the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, will be the featured speaker at the Diana Natalicio Lecture Series in recognition of National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week. The lecture is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in Room 106 of the Undergraduate Learning Center on the University of Texas at El Paso campus. During her remarks, Hurtado will explore transformative approaches to institutional change, drawing on her research into diverse student experiences, campus racial climates, and equity in higher education.
