El Paso Matters – El Paso events: Sun Bowl Parade, YMCA of El Paso Turkey Trot

Posted on November 27, 2024

Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade

El Paso’s biggest Thanksgiving tradition returns with the 88th annual Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade. This year’s event steps off beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, starting at Montana Avenue and Ochoa Street. The route continues along Montana before concluding at Copia Street.

The parade, themed “Celebrate, Honor & Remembering All The Heroes Who Have Served,” will honor community heroes, including military members, educators, and first responders. This year’s grand marshal is Wayne Thornton, a renowned longtime community volunteer who worked with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department for 42 years before retiring in 2020.

Families are encouraged to arrive early for prime viewing spots along the route, and bleacher seat tickets are available for $10 at select Vista Market locations. The two-hour event will be broadcast live on KTSM Channel 9 and streamed live at ktsm.com

YMCA of El Paso Turkey Trot

Work up a Thanksgiving Day appetite by participating in the 48th Annual YMCA of El Paso Turkey Trot on Thursday, Nov. 28. The race begins at 7 a.m. at the intersection of St. Vrain Street and Montana Avenue, offering participants a chance to get active before the holiday feast.

Registration costs vary, starting at $35, with late and day-of options available. Not a morning person? Support the event by joining the Turkey Trot Sleep-In or Double Feather Dash, featuring unique perks like pillowcases and medals. Race packets can be picked up Nov. 23-27 at the Westside Family YMCA, 7145 N. Mesa St., or the morning of the event. Information: elpasoymca.org
