UTEP Volleyball Closes Non-Conference Schedule
The University of Texas at El Paso volleyball team (7-2 overall record) will close its non-conference schedule Sept. 20-22 while hosting the UTEP Southwest Showdown at Memorial Gym, 101 W. Robinson Ave. The on-campus tournament will feature the Miners along with volleyball programs from Texas State University, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Texas State, which reached the opening round of the NCAA tournament last season, will face off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 3 p.m. Friday, followed by UTEP taking on UTRGV at 5:30 p.m. The action continues Saturday and wraps up Sunday with the Miners facing Texas State. El Paso Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Vivaldi Four Seasons — At Last’
The El Paso Symphony Orchestra presents “Vivaldi Four Seasons — At Last” at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday Sept. 20-21 at the Plaza Theatre. Conducted by Bohuslav Rattay, with violinist Matthew Vera as the soloist, the program will feature Antonio Lucio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” and Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 1 in D Major,” also known as the “Titan” symphony. Attendees can also join “Opening Notes” with Nathan Black at 6:30 p.m. in the Philanthropy Theatre for insights into the evening’s performance. Information and tickets: epso.org
Texas Tech Health El Paso Marks HSI Week
Texas Tech Health El Paso will host events on campus to mark Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week. The campus will hold its inaugural HSI Symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in rooms 1A105A and 1A105B of Medical Science Building II. Attendees can expect presentations on topics ranging from working with interpreters to culturally competent health care in the El Paso border region, featuring speakers such as Dr. Marcos Ortega and Dr. Sukhila Reddy. The symposium is supported by the Title V DHSI Grant and the Hunt School of Nursing.
In addition to the symposium, Texas Tech Health El Paso will host Dr. Cristóbal Rodríguez, associate provost and professor at Western Michigan University, as the keynote speaker for HSI Week. The event is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the Medical Science Building II auditorium. A virtual attendance option is open for those who are unable to attend in-person. Dr. Rodríguez, a White House appointee to President Joe Biden’s Advisory Commission, will discuss systemic educational equity and culturally responsive leadership, drawing from his upbringing in the El Paso area and extensive academic career. El Paso County Bond Community Meetings
El Paso County begins the third phase of its capital improvement bond community meetings this week, offering residents the opportunity to learn more about the proposedprojects and provide feedback. The next meeting is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in the El Paso Community College Transmountain Campus foyer, 9570 Gateway Blvd. North. Residents who are unable to attend in-person can watch the meeting remotely at capital.epcounty.com. Fort Bliss Oktoberfest
Fort Bliss will host its annual Oktoberfest celebration Sept. 20-22, featuring traditional German food, drinks and entertainment. The event, organized by Fort Bliss Morale, Welfare and Recreation, will take place at 12 Pershing Road on Fort Bliss. Festivities are open to individuals age 18 and older (must be age 21 for alcohol purchases) beginning at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. An all-ages family day event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Event will include performances from Terry Cavanagh and the Alpine Express, along with the German Air Force Schuhplattler Dancers. Honor Flight Arrives at El Paso Airport
The public is invited to welcome a group of U.S. Armed Forces veterans arriving on an Honor Flight trip from Washington, D.C., at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at El Paso International Airport, 6701 Convair Road. Attendees are asked to line the airport’s main lobby with signs, banners and flags as a show of support. The city of El Paso will validate parking for attendees.
Mindfulness at the Museum
The Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens invites the community to “Mindfulness at the Museum,” a series of engaging, mindfulness-based activities designed to help participants relax and recharge. The event is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. Attendees will be able to participate in a creative and meditative experience using mandala coloring sheets. The session is open to the public. The museum, located at 610 W. University Ave., will host mindfulness events every other Thursday through December.
Movie Night on the Lawn at the Fountains
A screening of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” will be part of the Fountains at Farah’s Movie Night on the Lawn this weekend. The event, part of the Flashback MNOTL series, will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the shopping center, located at 8889 Gateway Blvd. West. View of the most iconic films of the 1980s under the stars. Event is free.
Coffee at the Trail
Join the El Paso Mission Trail Association for “Coffee at the Trail” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Mission Valley Visitor Center, 9065 Alameda Ave. Guest speaker Dean Van Matre will discuss the region’s evolution from its days as a frontier of New Spain to the present, with a focus on the historic Mission Trails area.
