El Paso Matters – El Paso gets a ‘milder’ summer. But heat records show warming trend isn’t letting up

Posted on September 2, 2025

The comforting news for El Pasoans is that we had our mildest summer in three years. The less comforting news is that it was still hotter than all but seven summers in almost 140 years of recorded weather history.

The average temperature this summer – which is defined as June through August for meteorological record keeping – was just under 86 degrees. That’s more than 2 degrees cooler than the summers of 2023 and 2024, which were the hottest ever recorded in El Paso.

But the summer of 2025 was more than 2 degrees warmer than the average from 19921-2020.

Six of the eight warmest summers in El Paso’s history have come since 2020. Eight of the 10 warmest have come since 2011. It is an indication of how a combination of global climate change and local urbanization have intensified summer heat in El Paso, a desert city that sits at 3,800 feet in elevation.

El Paso had 33 days between June 1 and Aug. 31 where the temperature topped 100 degrees – more than a third of all days in those months. That’s the second-lowest number of triple-digit days in the past eight years. But it’s well above what used to be normal for El Paso.

The hottest day this summer was 109 June 15. That came during a stretch of 11 consecutive days of temperatures reaching at least 100 degrees, the longest streak of the summer.
