El Paso Matters – El Paso police, sheriff report decline in serious crime in 2025

Posted on April 8, 2026

Serious crimes reported last year to the El Paso police and sheriff’s departments declined from the previous year, according to numbers the agencies reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The El Paso Police Department reported an 11% decline in the serious crime categories tracked by state and federal governments: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, buglary, larceny, auto theft and arson.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said the number of crimes reported in the unincorporated areas of the county declined by 6%.

The number for both agencies is in line with a national trend that has seen reported serious crime resume a three-decade long decline after a spike during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the El Paso Police Department is the only one of the state of Texas’ 25 largest law enforcement agencies to report an increase in serious crime since 2021. The data reported by EPPD to the state showed increases in crime in 2022 and 2023, then decreases in the past two years.

The data are based on reports compiled by local law enforcement agencies using a process established by the FBI. The numbers are initially reported to the state, then to the FBI. They include crimes reported to law enforcement.

EPPD reported declines in six of the eight crime categories regularly tracked by the state and federal government. The increases were in murder and arson.

The number of violent crimes – murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults – reported to El Paso police in 2025 declined by 10% over the prior year, according to data reported to the state.

The number of property crimes – burglaries, larcenies, auto thefts and arsons – reported to El Paso police declined by 11% between 2024 and 2025.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office

The crime picture was more mixed for the sheriff, which provides law enforcement primarily to unincorporated areas of the county.

The number of crimes reported to the Sheriff’s Office was up in five categories – murder, rape, robbery, auto theft and arson. It was down in aggravated assault, burglary and larceny.

Reported violent crimes for the Sheriff’s Office were down 8% while property crimes were down just under 6%.

Reported crime data for smaller cities in El Paso County – such as Horizon City and Socorro – haven’t yet been released by the state.
