El Paso Matters – El Paso voters back Biden, Trump in primaries

Posted on March 6, 2024

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump were the picks of El Paso primary voters as they head to a rematch of the 2020 election.

Biden won 85% of the El Paso early votes in the Democratic primary, while Trump won 81% in the Republican primary. Nicki Haley, Trump’s sole remaining active challenger for the GOP nomination, won 14% of the El Paso early vote.

In the 2020 general election, Biden defeated Trump in El Paso County, 67%-32%.

Both candidates have struggled in past El Paso primaries. In 2016, Trump was the third choice among El Paso Republicans, behind Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. In 2020, the then-incumbent President Trump won 92% of the El Paso GOP vote in a primary with no major opposition.

In the 2020 Democratic primary, Biden won 28% of the vote and was a distant second behind Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

In the race for the nomination for U.S. senator for Texas, U.S. Rep. Colin Allred of North Texas led state Sen. Roland Gutierrez of San Antonio in El Paso early voting , 38%-21%. Statewide, Allred was building a large lead that might allow him to win the nomination without a runoff. The winner will take on Republican incumbent Ted Cruz in November.
