El Paso Matters – El Paso voters deciding Democratic, Republican primary runoff races Tuesday

Posted on May 28, 2024

El Pasoans on Tuesday are deciding the final nominees for the Democratic and Republican parties for the November general election.

Several races weren’t settled in the March primaries because no candidate received more than 50% of the vote. Those races are being decided in runoffs. Early voting was last week.

Election Day polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Registered voters can cast ballots at any vote center in El Paso County.

During early voting last week, 15,794 people cast ballots, with the vast majority doing so in the Democratic runoff. That’s just over 3% of registered voters.

El Paso Democrats have four runoff elections: for district attorney, sheriff, state House District 77, and county constable Precinct 1.

Any registered El Paso County voters except those who voted in the March Republican primary can vote in the sheriff and DA runoffs. The state House and constable races are open only to registered voters who live within those district boundaries, and who didn’t vote in the March Republican primary.

The only Republican runoff in El Paso County is for the Texas 23rd Congressional District, which includes a small part of El Paso and stretches to San Antonio. The only El Paso County residents eligible to vote in this race are those who live in the district boundaries and didn’t vote in the March Democratic primary.
