Superintendent Diana Sayavedra’s future with El Paso Independent School District will be on the line again Tuesday, when the school board is set to discuss a possible voluntary separation agreement and appointment of an interim superintendent.
The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the district’s administration building, 1014 N. Stanton St. The items for the special meeting were placed by board President Leah Hanany and Vice President Jack Loveridge, who have been critical of Sayavedra.
The meeting comes a week after a divided board met in closed session for three hours to discuss Sayavedra’s future, but adjourned without taking action. No board member explained a reason for removing Sayavedra at the meeting, but the board had previously voted 5-2 to reverse a decision to close Lamar Elementary School and to limit Sayavedra’s hiring powers.
Tuesday’s meeting also comes exactly one month after the May 3 school board elections that saw two of Sayavedra’s supporters defeated by candidates — Mindy Sutton and Robert Osterland who said the district needed a new direction. Hanany and Loveridge were reelected, creating an apparent shift in the board majority.
Numerous parents and district employees defended Sayavedra at the previous meeting and criticized Hanany.
Sayavedra and school board members couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Saturday morning.
The agenda for the upcoming meeting is more specific than the May 27 meeting, which listed discussion and possible action on Sayavedra’s employment.
The upcoming meeting has three items for possible action: a voluntary separation agreement with Sayavedra, changing her duties or employment status, and appointing an interim superintendent.
The board will go into closed session before any possible action to discuss Sayavedra’s future and to consult with Kevin O’Hanlon, an outside attorney hired last week by the board.
Ross Moore, president of the El Paso American Federation of Teachers, who has been critical of attempts to oust Sayavedra, said: “I’m very concerned about what Miss Hanany and her new team are up to.”
