El Paso Matters – Mayor runoff candidates will discuss issues in El Paso Matters/FitFam El Paso forum

Posted on November 14, 2024

The two candidates in the Dec. 14 El Paso mayoral runoff election have agreed to participate in a forum produced by El Paso Matters and FitFam El Paso.

The forum will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the El Paso Community College Administrative Services Center, 9050 Viscount Blvd. It will be livestreamed on FitFam’s Instragram account and on elpasomatters.org.

Businessman Renard Johnson finished first and city Rep. Brian Kennedy came in second in the eight-candidate mayor’s race in the Nov. 5 election. Because no candidate received a majority of votes, the two two finishers will meet again in the Dec. 14 runoff, which also will feature five City Council races and a municipal judge election.

“El Pasoans will be able to hear from the two candidates for mayor, who will be side by side and discussing the key issues facing our community, before early voting starts,” said El Paso Matters CEO Robert Moore, who will moderate the forum. “This will help voters make their choice in an election that will shape our community’s future for at least the next four years.”

Moore said the questions will be built around the theme of “What would you do as mayor?” Potential questions for the candidates will be solicited on the FitFam El Paso Instagram account and from subscribers to El Paso Matters’ text messaging service.

Early voting in the election is Dec. 2-10. The election is in the midst of the winter holiday season, when many people aren’t focused on politics.
