El Paso Matters – SISD superintendent rejected for job leading Arizona school district

Posted on November 30, 2023

Socorro Independent School District Superintendent Nate Carman will remain the district’s leader after an Arizona school district passed him over as its new superintendent.

The Peoria Unified School Board on Wednesday selected Kenneth Christopher Somers out of the three finalists that were announced earlier this month, including Carman.

The Peoria school district is located in Glendale, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix, and has more than 35,000 students and 44 campuses. SISD has more than 48,000 students and 49 campuses.

Carman took over as superintendent of SISD in March 2022.

When Carman first took the job at SISD, he signed a three-year contract set to run through March 14, 2025, with an annual salary of $335,000. In June, the board amended his contract, approving a 4% raise and taking his salary to $348,400 a year.

Peoria’s previous superintendent made $232,000 a year.

If Carman was chosen for the job in Peoria, the SISD board would have needed to agree with Carman to terminate the contract, according to the agreement.

SISD’s previous superintendent, Jose Espinoza, resigned days after two board members lost their reelection bids, giving board control to a group of newcomers who were critical of his performance.  The board voted 6-0 in May 2021 to buy out his contract, paying him $629,308, the equivalent of one year’s salary and benefits. Espinoza held the position for nine years and had five years left on his contract.

During Carman’s time overseeing SISD, the district reached record enrollment of over 48,000 students in January and hired two administrators who previously worked with him at his former job at the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District.
