This is your weekly update, which takes a quick look at the week ahead and some developments that El Paso Matters is following.
El Paso County’s Strategic Plan: As El Paso County officials prepare to update the county’s strategic plan, the County Commissioners Court is seeking input from the community on what should be priority areas. Residents are being asked to participate via the 2025 Strategic Plan Engagement Survey online. The survey focuses on priorities for the next four years and takes about 10 minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous. The survey closes on Jan. 12.
City Council District 2 Election: The last day to vote early in the District 2 City Council representative race is Tuesday, Dec. 5. Four candidates – Josh Acevedo, Veronica Carbajal, Ben Mendoza and Judy Gutierrez – are seeking to replace city Rep. Alexsandra Annello, who resigned to run for state representative. The winner will serve until December 2024. After two days of early voting, 161 people had voted at a voting center and 210 had voted by mail. There are four early voting sites. The election is Dec. 9.
El Paso Matters Book Club Discussion: An in-person discussion with Yasmín Ramírez, an El Paso Community College professor and author of “¡Ándale, Prieta! A Love Letter to My Family,” will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the El Paso Public Library Richard Burges Branch, 9600 Dyer Street. The event is free and open to the public. “¡Ándale, Prieta!” is a memoir that captures the bond between a grandmother and granddaughter. UTEP Named Among Best in Southern US: The University of Texas at El Paso has been named as one of the “best value” universities in the southern U.S. by Research.com, a research portal known for its university and science rankings. The study was conducted by a team of data scientists that looked at several factors, including academic excellence, affordability, degree offerings and return on investment. UTEP’s national ranking for best value was 27. The school was ranked seventh in terms of best value among the 566 colleges and universities in the southern United States.
