This is your weekly update, which takes a quick look at the week ahead and some developments that El Paso Matters is following.
Yarbrough Drive Upgrades: North Yarbrough Drive on the East Side is set to get $9.9 million in improvements as part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All program by the U.S. Department of Transportation. El Paso is one of 48 communities awarded federal transportation funding to improve roadway safety and prevent collisions resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. The proposed work includes adding or improving traffic signals, signage, lighting, bike lanes, curb extensions and speed limit signs, as well as to reduce speed and reduce lane widths along the corridor. The Yarbrough corridor has the second-highest number of vehicle collisions involving bicycles or pedestrians. It ranks among the top 10 roads within the city limits for wrecks resulting in death or serious injuries.
El Pasoan Appointed to Texas Commission for Women: El Paso businesswoman Cynthia “Cindy” Conroy has been reappointed to Gov. Greg Abbott’s Texas Commission for Women. Her term will run through Dec. 31, 2025. Conroy is the director of community outreach and the aide to the chairman of WestStar Bank. Conroy serves as the chair of the El Paso Community College Foundation, the Heart Gallery of El Paso, and is the immediate-past chair of the United Way of El Paso County. She is a member of the board of El Paso Matters, the Pioneer Association of El Paso County, the Community Advisory Partnership of El Paso Electric and the advertising review committee of the State Bar of Texas.
Interim City Economics Director: Karina Brasgalla has been appointed as the city’s interim director for the Economic and International Development Department. Brasgalla, who has been the assistant director since 2021, began her career with the city in the Planning and Inspections Department in 2017. Brasgalla is an AICP Certified Planner. She is a graduate of Columbia University and received her master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from Georgia Institute of Technology. She currently serves on the city Employee’s Retirement Trust Board.
Sneakers for Asylum Seekers: In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, El Paso County has started “Sneakers for Asylum Seekers.” The program encourages residents to donate new or gently worn athletic shoes to support asylum seekers. Also, the county is looking for volunteers to help gather and sort the shoes. Shoes will be collected through Jan. 12 and may be dropped off at the County Courthouse, 500 E. San Antonio Ave., 1st & 3rd floors; Downtown County Annex, 320 S. Campbell St.; Family Youth Services Center, 6314 Delta Drive; Fabens Community Center, 201 NW Camp St.; Agua Dulce Community Center, 15371 Kentwood Ave.; Canutillo Community Center, 7351 Bosque Road; Justice of the Peace #7, 435 Vinton Road, Suite C.
