Claudia Lizette Rodriguez served as City Representative of District 6 until she was voted out of office on December 17, 2022.
Her achievements while in office included voting to increase our property tax on August 24, 2021 and then denying it during her reelection campaign, voting to extend the contract of City Manager Tommy Gonzalez until 2029, voting to eliminate the mayoral veto and tie-breaking powers of our Mayor, supporting the construction of an arena in Duranguito after long opposing it, accepting campaign donations from the Margos, Hunts and Foster after promising not to.
She was fined $1,000 by the Texas Ethics Commission for multiple violations and then reprimanded by the City Ethics Review Commission for using her official position “to secure unwarranted privileges or exemptions” for herself, relatives, or others, and utilizing City resources “for personal benefit or the personal benefit of any other person or entity.”
After spending more than $5,200 on taxpayer-funded gasoline in 2022, she filled up her tank one last time on her final day in office, on January 2, 2023, showing her middle finger to the taxpayers on her way out the door.
RUNNING FOR COUNTY PRECINCT 1
Unwilling to stay out of politics and defiant to the last, on December 11, 2023 Rodriguez appointed a campaign treasurer to run for County Precinct 1 as a Republican and submitted the required form, listing herself as her own treasurer.
She will go up against the winner of the Democratic Primary–Peter Faraone, Sara Corona, or Oligarchy candidate Jaqueline Butler–and Libertarian Ryan Woodcraft, who is our favorite.
Rodriguez recently posted her policy priorities on her campaign Instagram page: claudia4eptx. After boasting that she “fixed” Saul Kleinfeld Drive, Montwood Drive, and Winn Road while on City Council—as if it were her initiative and her money–she states “Pelicano [Drive] is one of the main reasons I have decided to run to be your next County Commissioner, Precinct 1.”
Apparently no one told her that Pelicano Drive is not in Precinct 1.
On Tuesday, January 16 Rodriguez must file her first campaign finance report, and if she manages to do this on time, we will see who in El Paso had the courage to contribute to her election.
We feel certain she does not enjoy the backing of the Republican Party and doubt that donors will line up to support her, not even the Margo/Hunt/Foster crowd.
