The El Paso Taxpayer Revolt proudly endorses Arturo Alluin for City District 8. He is the strongest fiscal conservative on the ballot for that race and is committed to restraining taxation, spending, and government overreach. His extensive business experience will be a welcome addition to City Council. The fact that Bob Moore and El Paso Matters have targeted him in their reporting is a sure sign that he is the best candidate for the position.
We had supported the incumbent Chris Canales in his initial run for office, and he cast a lot of important votes, including his vote to cancel the construction of a boondoggle arena in Union Plaza. Yet, he also voted twice to increase our property tax, by a total of 11.5%, and he refused to vote to terminate Tommy Gonzalez. He voted to commit TIRZ 5 funds for the Debt Plaza. Most importantly, he is responsive only intermittently. He agreed twice to be interviewed by us but has refused to confirm an appointment. The fact he accepted the endorsement of the leftist Amanecer People’s Project is a real turn-off. We asked him for comment on the endorsement more than two weeks ago and he declined to respond.
The other serious candidate, Matthew Guzman, calls himself the “voice” of the Debt Plaza and favors large capital improvement projects with public financing. His is the Oligarchy candidate (there is always one in every major race). Predictably, his 30-day campaign finance report includes contributions from Hunt, Margo, Houghton, and their friends and allies. In his campaign literature, he downplays his support for massive spending, which we feel is dishonest, and tries to convince District 8 voters that he stands with the taxpayers, but no intelligent voter will believe him.
