As everyone knows, Congresswoman Escobar strategically backs candidates for local office in order to reinforce her political agenda.
Make no mistake about it. Mayor Johnson, City Rep. Chavez, and Sheriff Ugarte owe their positions in large part to the machinations of Escobar and her political apparatus in the 2024 election cycle.
All are Democrats yet have received substantial campaign contributions and other assistance from local Republicans, who often place their private interests above the GOP party platform.
That is correct!
Our local tax-and-spend policies are the result of both Democratic and Republican efforts.
CHANGE IS IN THE AIR
However, Escobar’s political position has been weakening with each election cycle.
In the General Election of 2020, she won 64.7% of the vote against Republican Irene Armendariz-Jackson, but in 2024 her lead against Armendariz-Jackson shrank to 59.4%.
In the current election cycle, Escobar lost control of the County Commissioners Court, since her incumbent allies Stout and Coronado were both defeated. Her BFF Ricardo Samaniego is facing a serious challenge from Republican Minerva Torres Shelton.
It remains to be seen whether Escobar can hold together her coalition on City Council given voter anger over the 4.3% property tax increase for 2026 and the expected additional increases over the next several fiscal years.
Given the suffering of the taxpayers and their growing intolerance for her woke posturing, Escobar’s long-time role as City and County kingmaker may soon be coming to an end.
The only area of government where she will likely maintain her iron grip is the El Paso State Delegation, which is 100% progressive Democrat and firmly within her camp.
