Last month the El Paso Times asked Rep. Alejandra Chavez this question: “What specific actions would you support to slow the growth of property tax bills or reduce services?”
Chavez responded with calculated dishonesty:
“I voted to lower the city’s property tax rate to its lowest level in a decade.”
Chavez knows the lower tax rate for FY 2026 was more than canceled out by the increase in property valuations, but she is dishonest and fears the wrath of the voters.
In fact, her vote to “lower the city’s property tax rate to its lowest level in a decade” was actually a 5.2% tax increase, raising the tax bill on the average-value single-family residence from $1,597 to $1,680 dollars.
To prevent this increase, City Council would have needed to adopt the no-new-revenue tax rate, which the CFO provided them well in advance of their budget vote, as he does every year.
Even worse, for FY 2027 Chavez voted to increase the city property tax by another 6.0%, from an average of $1,680 to $1,781.
Thus, after two consecutive years of no city property tax increases during the tenure of her predecessor Brian Kennedy, Chavez voted to increase the tax by a whopping 11.5% in less than two years in office without proposing a single solution for cutting spending.
Now that she has to face the voters in November, she is suddenly sympathetic to the suffering of the taxpayers.
VOTE HER OUT
District 1 voters, Chavez deserves to be defeated!
Her moneyed backers are throwing more than $100,000 at her election campaign to convince you she is good for El Paso, but we are not that stupid!
Dr. Sam Armijo is the only candidate for District 1 who has the skills and determination to tackle the city’s out-of-control spending and right the ship.
