Adam Powell, the finest investigative newspaper journalist in El Paso, reports that a Hispanic employee of METI, Renard Johnson’s company, filed a Title VII anti-discrimination suit when he was terminated “because of his opposition to a discriminatory practice.”
His opponent in the mayoral race, Rep. Brian Kennedy, commented in a recent mailer: “Renard got rich through no-bid federal contracts available to minority firms. But when a Hispanic male employed by Renard’s company, METI, lodged a complaint for discrimination, Renard retaliated by firing him.”
In 2018, a trial jury awarded the employee $277,000, including attorney and court fees.
The plaintiff was Ernesto Borrego, who had the courage to come forward and tell the El Paso Times “I want the citizens of El Paso to know that [Renard Johnson] violated a federal law. Not many employers in El Paso have claims against them on Title VII violations.”
“I don’t think he’s the right person [to be mayor],” Borrego concluded.
