EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The driver and passenger who died in a head-on crash Saturday afternoon, Aug. 9, near Tornillo, were identified, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPCSO).
As KTSM previously reported, at roughly 2 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the intersection of MF Aguilera and OT Smith in reference to a vehicle crash.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, preliminary investigation revealed that a Nissan Titan and a Mazda CX-5 were involved in a head-on collision.
The driver of the Mazda, identified as 51-year-old Maria Escudero Loya, was pronounced dead on the scene, EPCSO said.
The passenger of the Mazda, identified as 21-year-old Mayrin Perez, was transported to a local hospital, where she later died, EPCSO said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital for treatment for their injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office did not say how severe the injuries were for the Nissan driver.
EPCSO said it is unknown at this time if speed was a contributing factor.
The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing.
