EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Two people were killed in a crash in Northeast El Paso when a van and a military bus collided on Sunday evening, May 5, El Paso Police said.
The crash happened at about 6:30 p.m. at Gateway North Boulevard and State Line Road.
Police said their preliminary investigation showed that a military bus was traveling northbound on Gateway North and approaching the intersection of State Line Road.
The van was traveling eastbound on State Line when the driver pulled out in front of the bus as it entered the intersection, police said. That caused the bus to T-bone the van, police added.
The driver of van — identified as 50-year-old Ana Sandoval — was transported to a local hospital where she died. A front passenger in the van — 78-year-old Maria Del Carmen Sandoval-Cuellar — died at the scene.
Three other passengers in the van — ranging in age from 5 to 12 — were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries, police said.
The driver of the military bus remained on the scene and was not injured. Twenty-seven passengers on the military bus were taken to William Beaumont Army Medical Center to be evaluated for “superficial injuries,” police said.
Police did say one passenger on the bus received a non-life-threatening injury.
These were the 22nd and 23rd traffic fatalities this year compared to 21 at the same time last year.
