EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Sun Bowl Association announced on Thursday, the 91st Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024, at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.
The game will kick-off at noon (12:00 p.m. MT) and be televised on CBS for the 56th consecutive year.
“We are all very excited to have the game on our traditional date of New Year’s Eve and expect another great matchup between the ACC and Pac-12 and its legacy schools,” said Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “As in the past, the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and the events surrounding the game brings in the potential for great economic impact and excitement to our city and everyone in the Borderland.”
It is looking like an ACC team and a current Pac-12 or former Pac-12 team will play in this year’s Sun Bowl.
In February, Brett McMurphy of Action Network reported, the 10 schools leaving the Pac-12 this year likely will still play in Pac-12-affiliated bowls the next two seasons and not in bowl tie-ins with their new conferences.
KTSM spoke with Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas on Thursday and Olivas said that is the plan moving forward these next two years. Nothing is set in stone but is expected to be official soon.
The ten schools leaving the Pac-12 are known as the “Pac-12 legacy members”.
If the plan goes through, the Pac-12 legacy members: Oregon, UCLA, USC, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah, Cal, and Stanford will play in Pac-12 affiliated bowls and not in their respective new conference bowl games until 2026, per Action Network.
This is good news for the Sun Bowl, since the game’s current contract with the Pac-12 and ACC expires after the 2025 season. If this scenario does indeed play out, it would buy the Sun Bowl some time to find a new conference partner to pair with the ACC.
Tickets to the 2024 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl go on sale Sept. 1, 2024 and can be purchased via Ticketmaster or by calling 915-533-4416. Fans can also purchase tickets in the Sun Bowl Association office at 4150 Pinnacle Street, suite 100 in El Paso, Texas.
