EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Four seats are on the ballot in the El Paso Independent School District’s election on Saturday, May 3.
El Paso ISD is facing budget deficits and difficult decisions, and this election could help shape its future.
District 1
In District 1, financial advisor and incumbent Leah Hanany faces challengers Monica Elena Benjamin, an office administrator, and former teacher Nelson Bank.
Hanany voted against the district’s plan to close six schools next school year and two more the following year.
District 3
In District 3, incumbent Jack Loveridge, who also voted against closing schools, is facing public relations director John Ponce De Leon.
District 4
In District 4, incumbent Isabel Hernandez is running against Mindy Sutton, a senior instructor at the Otero County Detention Center, and Juan M. Duran, a special education teacher.
Hernandez voted in favor of closing schools.
District 5
In District 5, board president and incumbent Israel Irrobali is facing Robert Osterland, a veteran, and Melvin Milton, a mobility manager in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Irrobali also voted in favor of closing schools.
