KTSM News – 8 guns stolen from vehicles in 8 days in Las Cruces

Posted on January 7, 2025

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) is reminding the community to refrain from leaving guns unattended in vehicles as the department has taken reports of eight firearms stolen from vehicles in eight days.

LCPD said the stolen firearms include handguns, at least two rifles, and a shotgun. Most of the stolen firearms were taken from unlocked vehicles.

In addition, LCPD is offering the following tips to help prevent firearm thefts:

Remove firearms, ammunition, extra magazines, and accessories when leaving your vehicle unattended.

Roll up windows and lock doors when leaving a vehicle unattended.

Remove firearms and accessories before loaning a vehicle or leaving it at a repair shop.

Avoid decals or window stickers that identify you as a gun owner. Someone looking to steal a firearm may see that as an advertisement for what is inside.

To report a stolen firearm, call the police immediately at (575) 526-0795 and be prepared to provide the gun’s serial or identification number.
