EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Former UTEP football star and Burges High School graduate Aaron Jones got caught up in the madness of the NFL’s legal tampering period, the pre-free agency period, as the product out of El Paso was released by the Green Bay Packers on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
With the release, Jones is now a free agent and will test the waters. The official start of NFL free agency is on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.
Jones’ release came after the Packers landed Josh Jacobs, the Las Vegas Raiders running back from 2019-2023, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapport and To Pelissero.
The fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft has spent his whole career up to this point playing for the Packers. In seven seasons in Green Bay, Jones collected 5,940 rushing yards, 2,076 receiving yards, and 63 total touchdowns (45 rushing TDs, 18 receiving TDs).
Jones is one of the best running backs in Packers franchise history as he ranked third in rushing yards, fourth in rushing touchdowns, and seventh in total touchdowns.
In his seven-year tenure with Green Bay, Jones and the Packers made four playoff appearances, two of them ending in the NFC Conference Championship (2019, 2020).
It’ll be interesting to see where Jones lands next as he is one of the top running backs in the NFL.
