EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A grassroots El Paso organization celebrated four decades of fighting for the rights of people with disabilities, its victories along the way and the challenges that lie ahead.

El Paso Desert ADAPT gathered Saturday night, Oct. 26 at the Castle Ballroom in East El Paso to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

“Over the past four decades, this all-volunteer, grassroots disability rights activist organization has fought for the right of people with disabilities to live and thrive in our state and nation,” the organization said in a news release.

“Started before cell phones, before faxes, before the internet, before many of the tools we take for granted today, this group of dedicated activists had a vision of people with disabilities living in respect and self-determination as part of our communities. They fought against institutions, against architectural and communication barriers that kept people with disabilities out, against policies and laws that prevented disabled people from living freely and independently. They are still working on these and related issues today,” ADAPT said in its news release.

The organization also touted its “many victories,” including gaining full access to transit systems like Sun Metro and more sidewalks with curb cuts.

“Is the work done? Far from it. But the changes in our community, both physical and attitudinal, are huge,” the organization said.
