EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 58-year-old Alamogordo, New Mexico man was convicted of multiple counts of child sexual abuse, according to the Twelfth Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Alamogordo.
John Nelson West, 58, was convicted by an Otero County jury of five counts of criminal sexual penetration, one count of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of enticement of a child.
The jury reached its verdict on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
The investigation began in May 2023, when a child reported to law-enforcement officials that an adult in her immediate family had sexually abused her and the abuse had been going on for a period of time.
Following the child’s report, an arrest warrant was issued for West, who was subsequently taken into custody.
The successful prosecution of this case was made possible through the collaborative
efforts of multiple agencies, the Alamogordo DA’s Office said.
The investigation was conducted by the Alamogordo Police Department, and the Child Advocacy Center, Kid’s Inc., was instrumental in providing a secure, safe and professional setting to give the child a voice to be heard, the DA’s Office said.
